Breeding Rabbits as Indoor Pets
Rabbits make great pets, and most can be trained to live indoors without a lot of headaches, so they can be lovely companions for years to come. You can also let them out to wander in a safe, enclosed area so they get the most out of their lives. They can be housebroken, trained to walk on a halter style leash (never use a collar!) and be taught many tricks. They will even sleep and eat with their human family.
Many people don’t know rabbits can be great pets. They just lock them up in a cage all day or end up giving them away to shelters. However with some research, you can learn all the exciting things about bunny rabbits that you never knew. Rabbits are easily litter trained and are known for the scentless droppings, perfect for an indoor pet. Just at a couple months old they can be taught to go in the litter box filled with bunny litter. As long as their cages are kept clean, they should not have any odor issues and make a great pet in that way. Always keep fresh water available and feed your rabbit once a day using the food manufacturer’s instruction.
Speaking of cages, never keep our rabbit cooped up all day in a cage. They are not simple not made for this. If you want the type of pets you can keep in a cage all the time, try a hamster or gerbil that can get most of its daily exercise from a cage. Rabbit on the other hand, even the dwarf varieties, are simply too big to get the entire exercise requirement when confined to a small area for many hours a day. That does not mean you shouldn’t get a cage for your rabbit. But simply to allow them to go out of the cage, and hop around in a rabbit-safe room.
When let loose, in a rabbit safe environment, many rabbits show quite comical and interesting behaviors. They will hop along after you and follow your daily routines. Many breeds love to sit on your lap and be petted or just be close when you are reading a book or watching TV. These domestic breeds tend to bond closely with their human family or that one special person. They can even be taken on walks outside the house and learn to do a variety of cute rabbit tricks. By letting your rabbit run free and interact with you freely, you will learn their unique and wonderful personalities.
